It doesn’t automatically upshift when you hit the redline, it’ll let you bounce off of it as much as you like!

It only upshifts automatically when you downshift making the engine spin past it’s redline. (EG – Shifting into Gear 3 at 120mph).

That’s not complete control IMHO :) But well, at least it doesn’t interfer with normal driving as so many bad “manual” modes for automatics which upshift when getting to redline.

GT3LM November 23, 2009 at 7:28 pm

Yup, it lets the driver stay in complete control, however will make an automatic downshift when the engine goes below idling speed, or an automatic upshift if you suddenly downshift past the rev governor, even in manual mode,

Does that also change gears automatically or does at least porsche’s PDK let the driver in control (either by driving in the “red zone” or even in the 5th gear with 20kmh when wanted)?

awesome

i do understand what your saying but this does seem like a good transmission from what ive read, idk how it will catch on though most porsche’s i see are manual

fcabido November 23, 2009 at 8:50 pm

it still has a stick! just bang it up or down like an smg.

skbuoy November 23, 2009 at 9:08 pm

True. PDK system is very good. However, for us Porsche fanactics, just thinking about a Porsche without manual is just crazy! It’ll take some time to get use to.

SixHundredHP November 23, 2009 at 9:15 pm

I still prefer a manual for the way that it gives you more control over the car.

BOZOPUSSYCAT November 23, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Embrace technology. You heard it yourselves, PDK is faster and more efficient then manual.

PyQua2 November 23, 2009 at 10:03 pm

Faster than Manual (0.2 secs) and can be driven as either, how can ya beat that?

Don’t get me wrong, love stick, but I’m all about speed overall, and this definitly is faster

green95gt November 23, 2009 at 10:18 pm

Not for nothin’ but I get 17 city and 26 highway on my mustang with a stock 5.0L, 145+ miles, manual, and a 3.55 final drive. The highway mileage is with cruising at 70-75mph. On a fresh engine makin’ 350bhp I’d get more fuel economy. It’s all about how you drive.

wideopen704 November 23, 2009 at 10:24 pm

I hope this gearbox doesn’t catch on, you only need 6 gears and a footclutch in a porsche to really drive the car.

biffnacid November 23, 2009 at 11:10 pm

is this transmission made by porsche or is it made by getrag?

mahamza86 November 23, 2009 at 11:21 pm

Porsche invented it to be used in motorsports and volkswagon used it for the first time in their road cars, i think it was VW golf with so called DSG gearbox and as audi is the child company of VW it copied it. but porsche allowed VW to use it before them because Porsche owned the VW! Twisty aint it

chriscap2 November 23, 2009 at 11:51 pm

porche should put the engine in front of the car.

bg1379 November 24, 2009 at 12:36 am

Tons of cars do especially European spec cars such as Audi.

billyyays November 24, 2009 at 1:32 am

mhd86 November 24, 2009 at 1:32 am
