that form being a back to front formation where to shift you push the shifter straight forward to shift up and in a standard sequential gear box neutral is controlled by the clutch and the firthist back position. Then to shift into first you push it up one position then up to the next position for second and so forth. In a racing sequential box more often than not an air or hydraulic assister is used so that all you have to do is push the stick up or down to shift while in the same position.

yes for everyones clarification a Sequential Gearbox is a gear box that has the gears alined in a back to front design. Standard manual transmissions use what is referred to as a dog leg arrangement. This means from 1st you shift straight down to 2nd then from 2nd to 3rd you have to shift up and over then straight down to 4th (and if you have a 5th and 6th gear) then up and over to 5th then straight down to 6th. sequential means that the gears have been arranged in a completely different form

I would guess this is a real sequential gearbox and not just a regular manual gearbox with hydraulic acutautors.

what engine ur e36 has??? Just curious…

ONE WORD: NICE RIDE

quickcooper61 December 14, 2009 at 10:45 pm

actually to be correct on a hill climb 2002 they would not have used the same sequential gearbox as the e46 M3. Not all sequential manual gear boxes use paddle shifters I guess you could put them on if you wanted because most of them use air shifters so you can use paddles or the standard stick. Either way the stick shifter is much much more effective than paddles, as paddles are very awkward to use… Especially in a hill climb setting. I would guess that its a Quaife built racing smg ;)

Sequential Manual Gearbox. manual transmission with paddle shifters. They offer them on newer BMW’s but this one had to have had some crazy modification to get one in there.
